Lov K. Grover, 3C-404A Bell Labs, 600 Mountain Avenue, Murray Hill NJ 07974 ([email protected]) Summary A quantum computer has a clear advantage over a classical computer for exhaustive search. The quantum mechanical algorithm for exhaustive search was originally derived by using subtle properties of a particular quantum mechanical operation called the Walsh-Hadamard (W-H) transform. This paper shows that this algorithm can be implemented by replacing the W-H transform by almost any quantum mechanical operation. This leads to several new applications where it improves the number of steps by a square-root. It also broadens the scope for implementation since it demonstrates quantum mechanical algorithms that can readily adapt to available technology.

Unconventional Quantum Computing Devices
This paper investigates a variety of unconventional quantum computation devices , including fermionic quantum computers and computers that exploit nonlinear quantum mechanics. It is shown that unconventional quantum computing devices can in principle compute some quantities more rapidly than 'conventional' quantum computers. Computers are physical: what they can and cannot do is determined by t...
متن کاملP-156: A Study about Toxicity of CdSe Quantum Dots on Male Sexual System of Mice and Controlling This Toxicity by ZnS Coverage in Immature Mice
Background: Quantum dots are commonly composed of cadmium contained semiconductors. Cadmium is potentially hazardous but toxicity of such quantum dots is not yet systematically investigated. On the other hand, in vitro studies have shown almost complete control of CdSe induced cytotoxicity by ZnS coverage. Toxicity of CdSe quantum dots and controlling this toxicity by ZnS coverage in immature m...
متن کاملQuantum Information Processing in Continuous Time
Quantum mechanical computers can solve certain problems asymptotically faster than any classical computing device. Several fast quantum algorithms are known, but the nature of quantum speedup is not well understood, and inventing new quantum algorithms seems to be difficult. In this thesis, we explore two approaches to designing quantum algorithms based on continuous-time Hamiltonian dynamics. ...
متن کاملCan Quantum Computers Be Useful When There
Formulation of the problem. Quantum computers (see, e.g., 5]) have a potential of speeding up computations in many important problems. For example: By using Grover's algorithm 3, 4], for any given error probability e 0 , we can search for an item in an n-item (un-sorted) database in (p n) steps (where checking that a given element is the desired one is counted as a single step). By contrast, th...
متن کاملTools for Quantum Algorithms
We present efficient implementations of a number of operations for quantum computers. These include controlled phase adjustments of the amplitudes in a superposition, permutations, approximations of transformations and generalizations of the phase adjustments to block matrix transformations. These operations generalize those used in proposed quantum search algorithms.
